Part One: Reading academic texts

In Part One of these materials we will study some of the skills you need to deal with academic texts. In particular, we will consider:

  • quickly surveying certain parts of the text (titles, headings, instructions, first and last paragraphs, the first sentence of each paragraph) to get a general idea of the content and decide if it is useful
  • avoiding dictionaries and ignoring unknown words to start with
  • setting our own questions (based on what we learned when we surveyed it) to help focus our reading
  • reciting what we have learner to make sure we understand it
  • using the context to guess the meaning of unknown words
