During a lecture you will not only listen to the lecturer but you will also have to take notes to recall the content of the lecture. Although everyone has to develop their own style of note-taking, here are some general tips:
- Don't start writing as soon as the lecture begins, but listen for some minutes and decide what you want to write down. Do this for the whole lecture.
- Don’t try to write down every single word, but restrict your notes to the most relevant information
- If you only write down some key words, you won’t be able to track an argument that the lecturer developed
- Use headings and sub-headings that follow the organization of the lecture
- Develop your own shorthand (e.g. abbreviations, arrows to signal connections, etc.)
The following exercise will help you decide which information is most relevant for note-taking. When you have finished, click the "Next Exercise" button and you are re-directed to this site to do the next exercise below.
Now watch the video again and take notes. Check your notes with a partner or check here for a model.
