Farm Management (AGR 332)

Summary of the Farm Management module (AGR 332)

Module AGR 332 is designed to develop student's knowledge of the principles and techniques needed to successfully manage farms now and into the future. Details of the contents of the course are posted on the timetable of module AGR 332. An good indication of the nature of the material covered is obtained for the reference listings. This module allows students to put into practice the issues and techniques discussed and introduced during lectures. A proportion of the lectures are workshops during which students work through examples and discuss issues with lecturers and colleagues.

Assessments

The module is assessed on the basis of three projects. The workshops take students through the thought processes and techniques that will be needed to successfully complete these assignments. One project allows students to design a piece of software that would be of use as a farm management tool. The other two projects involve visits to local farms to assess the financial structure of a farm business and to estimate a tender for rental. In both projects students must assume the role of a professional consultant; in the first project to advise on improvements and changes to the businesses that may be required to maintain the business over the forseeable future and in the second to calculate farm plan that comes up with a realistic rent for the project farm.
