Getting started

  • Choose a text and survey it to make sure it is suitable, useful and interesting to you. Follow this link to Recommended web-sites. Follow the link to Choosing a suitable text from Part One if you need to remind yourself how to do it.
  • Remember to ignore any new words in the text for the moment. Try not to use your dictionaries at this point.
  • When you select a suitable text, work through it section by section setting yourself questions, reading to find (and note) the answers then testing yourself by answering your own questions aloud. Follow the link to Find and understand the key points from Part One if you need to remind yourself how to do it.
  • When you have read the whole text and have a good idea of the general and main points, focus on the unknown words in the text and try to guess their meaning. Follow the link to Dealing with new words from Part One if you need to remind yourself how to do it.
  • Remember to keep a record in your reading journal.
