Various pollen exercises based on a simplified NW European interglacial sequence.
More description to follow.
In this practical students will examine the transition between pre- and post- colonial vegetation communities in southern Australia.
This is a simple exercise based on 5 pollen taxa and 3 slides that will introduce students to the use of pollen analysis types to uncover vegetation changes following colonial settlement in southern Australia.
Objectives
Study site*
The samples in this practical come from a swampy area near a creek called Balcombe. This is located near Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The site is very small (<0.2 km2) and permanently waterlogged.
You have been provided with pollen slides from these two time periods: - Pre-colonial time (before ca. 1788 CE) - Post-colonial times (since 1788 CE to present)
Student should analyse three slides (A, D, E) and place them in the correct time period according to their findings.
