Jim and Anke present at the CMS Meeting in Urbana

Jim and Anke both presented at this year’s CMS Meeting, which took place in Urbana-Champaign, Il, USA from 11 to 14 June. The presentations were scheduled in parallel sessions at exactly the same time, so no exciting pictures of the action of presenting, unfortunately. One highlight of the conference was clearly the pre-conference barbecue at Joe Stucki’s house (thanks to Joe and his wife again!) – complete with a CMS cake!

Another highlight was the conference dinner, which was held in the University’s football stadium and where Jim – also officially – received his CMS travel award from the current CMS president.

Jim wins Travel Grant

Jim has won a travel grant from the Clay Mineral Society to attend the Society’s Annual Meeting in June this year. The meeting will be held in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, and Jim will present the results of his work in a presentation titled Microbially mediated abiotic reduction of clay mineral iron: understanding the role of secondary precipitates for contaminant remediation.

Congratulations, Jim!

Group visit to Goldschmidt 2017 Paris

The entire Neumann group presented their work at this year’s Goldschmidt Conference, which took place in lovely Paris. Jim was the first to go and presented in the session on ‘SUSTAINABLE SOIL REMEDIATION: BIOGEOCHEMICAL FOUNDATIONS AND INNOVATIVE APPROACHES’. Kath and Anke both presented Friday afternoon in the session on ‘BIOTIC AND ABIOTIC IRON REDOX TRANSFORMATIONS IN NATURAL AND ENGINEERED SYSTEMS’. All engaged successfully with the research community and enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere.

During the conference, we also met colleagues from all over the world, for example Zhantao Han from the China University of Geosciences, Wuhan. (From left to right: Jim, Kath, Anke, Zhantao)

Last but not least, Kath and Jim also brought back a souvenir for the Mössbauer, which – for obvious reasons – could not travel to Paris.

MSc student Davy wins best presentation award

David (Davy) Mains carried out his MSc project in the Neumann group, working with Jim on ‘The degradation of halogenated ethylenes by iron(II)-organic ligand complexes’. His presentation on the results of his work was voted by his fellow students to be the ‘best presentation’ during this year’s MSc conference. Congratulations Davy!

Kath and Anke presented at the 2017 CMS Meeting in Edmonton, Canada

Kath and Anke presented at this year’s annual meeting of the Clay Minerals Society, which took place in Edmonton, Canada, beginning of June 2017. In addition to great scientific discussions and extensive networking, this meeting has been memorable because  Kath was awarded her Travel award and the Blair Jones/Jane Flynn award at the Conference Banquet. This award is given each year to the highest rated Travel Grant Application. Congratulations Kath!
