Finding your way here

The King George VI Building is located on Queen Victoria Road in Newcastle upon Tyne, across from the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) and Great North Children’s Hospital.

There are two main entrances to the building:

  • The main/west entrance is on the ground floor, between the Central and South wings, next to St Thomas’ Street:
    • up a few stairs and through a revolving door, or
    • up a ramp and through an automatic door, on the north side of the carpark
  • The back/east entrance is on the basement level, between the Central and South wings, on King’s Road
    • through automatic doors and wooden doors; fully wheelchair accessible

Basement Facilities

The Living Room Lab (B.01), Computer Cluster & Collaboration Suite (B.02), and Phonetics Lab (B.03) are located on this level in the South Wing.

To reach them from the Basement/East Entrance, enter the building and turn left. At the end of the corridor, turn right at the South Lift and stairwell. The LingLab rooms are through the double doors.

To reach them from the Main/West Entrance, enter the building and turn right. Go through the double doors and take the South Lift or the stairs down to the Basement level. The LingLab rooms are through the double doors on the left.

Second Floor Facilities

To reach them from the Basement/East entrance, enter the building and turn left. The South Lift and stairwell are at the end of the corridor.

To reach them from the Main/West entrance, enter the building and turn right. The South Lift and stairwell are at the end of the corridor.

From the South Lift and stairwell, go to the second floor and turn left through the corridor doorway. The entrance to the Eye-tracking Lab is on the right, through room 2.12.

Accessibility

Both levels have male and female toilets nearby. Gender neutral / single occupancy / DDA accessible toilets are easily accessed on the Basement level, in the Central Wing. The closest gender neutral / single occupancy / DDA accessible toilets to the Eye-tracking Lab are on the Ground Floor in the South Wing, or the Basement level in the Central Wing.

The large recording booth in B.03 is equipped with an accessibility ramp for Booth 1. All rooms are wheelchair accessible.

Travel to Campus and King George VI Building

By Car: Parking near the LingLab in the King George VI Building is often very limited, but there are five car parks nearby: Leazes Lane Car Park, Terrace Place Car Park, Eldon Garden Car Park, Eldon Square Car Park and Claremont Road Car Park (all outlined in red on the map below).

By Metro: The closest Metro station to KGVI is Haymarket Station, however for some directions of travel and times of year, Monument Station is more convenient. If coming by rail, Central Station Metro is adjacent to Newcastle Central Station. Both Green and Yellow Metro lines stop at these three stops (all outlined in blue on the map below).

By bus: Check the local timetables and maps for more details. There are many bus stops convenient to KGVI.
