Introduction.

Bismuth tungstate, Bi₂WO₆, is an Aurivillius phase with a structure consisting of alternating (Bi₂O₂)²⁺ and (WO₄)^2- layers stacked in the c direction.

Anisotropy in the ab plane due to the asymmetric bismuth coordination environment gives rise to ferroelectric properties.
